The Musicians

Tim Drackert Tim Drackert's guitar solos on Rio are the kind that run around in your head, begging to be heard again. But when you try to hum them, they become elusive. So you get out the CD again and have another listen. They're memorable and accessible, yet sophisticated and tricky. To top it all off he arranged, produced, mixed, and motivated Rio . Tim started the band, then called The Tim Drackert Group, in 2002. He is currently at work on a solo CD of his original music.

Julia Yates Julia Yates first started sitting in with the band when she was in high school. A few years later she was a full-time member, singing classic bossa nova in Brazilian Portuguese, which she learned from listening to such albums as Nara Leão's Girl from Ipanema and the famous Getz-Gilberto recording. Her voice has been described as soft, sensuous, and smoky.

Dennis Unsworth Dennis Unsworth is a very musical drummer. He's played in numerous vocal ensembles, so he knows the tunes and even the lyrics for the jazz pieces we do live and on the album. His playing on the bossas is also superb. He can play aggressively on up-tempo tunes, but he can also play soft without losing any drive. Whether he's soloing or playing a supportive role in the rhythm section, he's in touch with the subtle nuances of the music. Particularly impressive on the CD is his brush work and his use of the flat ride cymbal, reminiscent of Roy Haynes and Paul Wertico.

Rennan Rieke

RENNAN RIEKE has played in many genres of music all over the country. His warm sound is perfect for Bossa Nova. He's respectful of the genre, even when it means underplaying. His acoustic bass provides the solid foundation for all the rhythmic syncopation that goes on top. Best of all, he's always listening and responding to the rest of the band. Playing with him is like having a good conversation.
